History:
History of Abbey Wood dates back to the 19th century. The area is noted for its three phases of house building. The Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society (RACS) purchased two farms in the area, and they constructed the Bostall Estate here between 1900 and 1930. The area surrounding the estate, which was once know as "Tin Check Island", boasts a school, shops and streets that are named for Co-operative themes (Rochdale, Congress, Robert Owen, etc).In the year of 1959, the London County Council constructed the Abbey Estate on former Royal Arsenal marshland to the north of the village. This estate area consists of conventional brick houses with gardens, shopping centres, schools, and open spaces. It was originally built to accommodate people from the East End of London. Eynsham Drive is the main through-road.
The Greater London Council commenced the construction of the first stage of Thamesmead in the early 1970s. They built buildings on more ex-Royal-Arsenal land, situated north-east of Abbey Wood railway station.
