Overview:
Basildon town lies in the southern part of Essex, around 30 miles east of London, the capital and largest city of England. It was created as a new town after the Second World War to include the London inhabitants overspill. Basildon is in the larger Basildon district, at 51°34′34″N, 0°29′19″E, and has much to offer.The first historical reference of Basildon can be found in the Domesday Book as 'Belesduna'. According to this book, the area played a significant role in the 1086 country history. It is said that the town got its name from the Anglo-Saxon name of 'Beorhthealh' and the Anglo-Saxon word dun for hill (“dun”). In the past, Basildon was also known as Belesduna, Batlesdon, and Berdlesdon.Basildon includes a number of ancient towns, such as Laindon, Pitsea, and Vange. Basildon district was formed in 1974 by the Local Government Act of 1972. Other towns in the districts include Billericay and Wickford.Basildon is one of the most successful towns in the country with a thriving business community and a lively regional shopping area. Major industries in the town include chemicals, light engineering, clothing manufacturing, and printing. There are several high street and local retailers in the town centre.Basildon boasts a trading leisure park known as Festival Leisure Park, which is owned and managed by Norwich Union. Affectionately known locally as Bas Vegas, the area features many restaurants, a cinema, a fitness facility, and a hotel. Other places of interest are Langdon Visitor's Centre and town museum.Basildon is home to a number of Secondary Schools, which include Beauchamps School, Billericay School, Bromford School, Chalvedon School, De La Salle School, and James Hornsby High School.

Basildon has excellent road and rail links that connect it with London, and the rest of the County and South East England. The A127 and the A13 motorways run close to the town. Basildon has three railway stations, namely, Basildon railway station, Pitsea railway station, and Laindon railway station. Approximately 25 minutes drive away is the London Stansted Airport, while London Gatwick Airport is just an hour drive away.
