Bingley is a town in the Metropolitan county of West Yorkshire, England. Located five miles north-west of Bradford, the town is part of the City of Bradford Metropolitan District. It is divided into two wards, Bingley Rural and Bingley Town. The town was probably founded in Saxon periods. Similar to most towns in the region, Bingley thrived from the Industrial Revolution. The town is occasionally called the "Throstle's Nest of Old England". It is said that this name is shared with the town of Wigton in Cumbria.According to the 2001 Census, Bingley town had a population of 15,925, while Bingley Rural had a population of 16,649. Famous people from the town include Fred Hoyle (an astronomer), John Braine (an author), Rodney Bewes (an actor), Muriel Aked (an actress), and Gene Baxter (a Radio DJ.). The head offices of Bradford & Bingley, the UK’s seventh largest bank, are situated between Bingley and nearby Keighley.
