The Captain was so impressed by the place that he bought some acres and constructed a house, which is now part of the Royal Exeter Hotel. The town was to develop around the beach’s pines trees that were planted by Tregonwell. Over a few years, rapid development in Bournemouth has occurred and it became a perfect destination for rich holiday-makers and for invalids who looking for the sea air.
In 1974, Bournemouth was part of the non-metropolitan county of Dorset. In 1997, it became an independent unitary authority. For the purposes of the Lieutenancy, Bournemouth still stands as a part of the ceremonial county of Dorset.
