Overview:
Buckingham is a thriving market town in north Buckinghamshire, around 10 miles away from the boundary with Northamptonshire, in South East England. The town has developed quickly over the past 25 years. Buckingham has several historic buildings (mostly of Georgian look), which attract a large number of people from the far and near.
The town boasts a number of good leisure facilities, which include swimming pools, health clubs, and all-weather sports pitch. There are also golf courses, horse riding schools, cricket pitches, and football pitches. A wide variety of shops, restaurants and pubs can be seen in and around the town centre.
Buckingham is famous for its University, which is the UK's first and only private university. The University of Buckingham conducts regular Concerts and Lectures, where students, staff, and townspeople can participate in. The Buckingham Music Festival is an annual music event celebrated here amid much pomp and splendor. The nearby Padbury Village hosts the famous National Blues and Folk Festival.
Buckingham was traditionally the county town of Buckinghamshire. Alfred the Great declared it as the “county town” in AD 888. It is said that Buckingham town was the final resting place of St Romwald - a little known Saxon saint. The parish church located at Strixton (Northants) is dedicated to the saint.
According to 2001 census, the town has a population of 11,572. The centre of the town is the historic market place. There are many 18th century buildings surrounding this area.
