History:
The area occupied prior to the Roman Empire. A collection of hunting weapons of the Late Bronze Age, starting around 1000 BC, were excavated from the region. Other archeological evidences show that the Belgic tribe lived on Castle Hill during the Iron Age, in the 1st century BC.
The first notable development of Cambridge commenced with the Roman invasion in AD 40. The Romans built several roads and walled enclosures, which can still be seen in the region. The Saxons took over the land when the Roman had left in AD 400. The grave goods of Saxons can be seen in the place. In Anglo-Saxon period, Cambridge achieved good trade links from nearby place.
The rulers who came after the Saxons in Cambridge were the Vikings in 875. Their dynamic trading habits helped Cambridge grow rapidly. After the end of the Viking time, the area was again come in possession of the Saxons who built St. Benet's church in 1025.
