Overview:
Canterbury is a city situated in the most attractive corner of rural Kent in South East England, on the River Stour. A UNESCO world heritage site, it is one of the most famous cathedral cities in the United Kingdom. Canterbury is home to the cathedral where St. Thomas a Becket was martyred in 1170. The city is the headquarters of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the primate of the Anglican Church.
Canterbury has still maintained both an old world attraction and a cosmopolitan vitality. There are numerous ancient buildings, bars, shops, and restaurants found in the medieval city centre. The cathedral city of Canterbury can be easily accessed by road, rail or sea.

History:
Archeological findings prove that Canterbury has been occupied since prehistoric periods. Many Neolithic round barrows and Bronze Age equipments were unearthed in the area. The city was once a Roman administrative centre. The city walls built by the Romans are still seen here.
The city got its name from the Old English Cantwarebyrig, which means “fortress of the men of Kent”. The present Canterbury Castle, a historical building, was initially the Motte and Bailey castle constructed by the Normans.
Canterbury received its county corporate status in 1461. In the 16th century, the place was occupied by French Protestant refugees who introduced silk-making. In 1888, it became a county borough under the Local Government Act. Canterbury suffered severe damages during World War II.
Today, the city is England’s one of the major centres of tourism. The Canterbury Cathedral alone attracts around one million visitors every year.
