History:
It is clear that Romans occupied in the Carlisle area. They built a timber fort around AD 72/73 and a second fort around AD 103 to 105. The latter fort was replaced by a stone fort in AD 165.
Carlisle was developed into a major industrial city in the 19th and early 20th centuries. During that time, the city had several textile mills, food manufacturers, engineering works in the Caldewgate, Denton Holme, and Wapping areas. A canal dug in the early 19th century connected Caldewgate with the sea at Port Carlisle. This canal later replaced by the railway line.
Carlisle became a municipal borough in 1835. It was made as county borough in 1914. The city received its Fairtrade City status on March 28, 2005.
