Overview:
Chelmsford is largely a commercial town in Essex, approximately halfway between London and Colchester, in the east of England. It lies almost exactly in the centre of Essex, around 50 km north east of the capital. Since the early 13th century, Chelmsford has been the administrative centre of Essex. The town is also the capital of the Borough of Chelmsford. The population of the town is estimated at 110,000 inhabitants.Chelmsford was awarded municipal borough status in 1888 by the Municipal Corporations Act 1882. It was initially an agricultural and market town. Since the 19th century, the town has been an important centre for manufacturing. It gained its Fairtrade Town status On January 6, 2005.
The town is home to the Diocese of Chelmsford. The Chelmsford Cathedral, constructed in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, is regarded the second smallest cathedral in the country. During that time, the Cathedral was the parish church of the thriving medieval town.The Anglia Ruskin University has a campus in Chelmsford. Other education institutions are the Chelmsford County High School and King Edward VI Grammar School (founded by King Edward VI in 1551). The town boasts two medium sized shopping centres, namely, High Chelmer and The Meadows. There is also a large High Street full of independent and chain stores.Nearby places to the town include Boreham, Brentwood, Galleywood, Hatfield Peverel, Ingatestone, Shenfield, Stock and Writtle.
