Gloucester later became the seat of Mercia, the Anglo-Saxon kingdom. It was an important trade center and played a major role in England's history after the Norman Conquest of 1066.
Gloucester was incorporated in 1483. It then continued to thrive as a trading center and pilgrimage destination. King Henry VIII selected the abbey church Gloucester Cathedral in 1541. Since then, the church has been a working Anglican cathedral.
