Overview:
Leeds is a major city located in the northern Yorkshire County of England. Its important positioning, halfway between London and Edinburgh, places the city in the heart of the country. Since it is one of the key centres of European commercial and cultural existence, Leeds draws new inhabitants to its cosmopolitan centre. Already boasting more than 700,000 occupants, the city is home to people from over 75 countries.
This lively, affluent city harmonizes its economic achievement with a vibrant arts, sporting and entertainment scene. Shopping malls, galleries, hotels, new and refurbished theatres, cafe bars, stylish offices, and award-winning architecture also constitute its position as one of the most visited cities in the country. The inhabitants of Leeds are locally called Loiners; though the name is rarely used.

Geography and Climate in Leeds
The main geographical feature is the River Aire, which runs through the city. The weather features rain throughout the year, temperatures creeping up gradually in summer months, and diminutive hours of sunshine during winter. The average winter temperature in the month of July is about 20°C (68°F). This does not exceed of an average 10°C (50°F) from November through to March.

History:
According to some evidences, Leeds was first occupied in about 500 BC. Later in 800 AD, the restoration of European Christianity led to the establishment of many religious sites in the region. In the Middle-Ages, it was an agricultural market town. By 1207, Leeds received its first charter. During the Tudor era, Leeds produced woolen cloths and traded with neighboring places.
As a result of the industrial revolution, the population of Leeds had risen to over 150,000 by 1840. By the 20th century, it started several academic institutions. Some of them are known today as the Leeds Metropolitan University, University of Leeds, and Leeds Trinity & All Saints. Today, it is considered as the most important city of the ceremonial county of West Yorkshire.

Christian people of which most belong to the Church of England dominate the city. The Muslim community of Leeds is prominent and thriving; numerous mosques can be found in the city. Gurdwara's (Temples) that spread across the city represent the Sikh population. A large Jewish community resides around the Alwoodley area. There are also various Buddhist sects. Hindu community is relatively small and has a temple at Hyde Park.
The cultural life of the city also includes sporting heritage, media activities, museums, arts, music, and many festivals.
