Liverpool is a lively and very diverse city in Europe to visit at any time of year. This beautiful metropolitan borough is located in North West England, by the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary. Now classed as a World Heritage city, it is full of excitement, culture and an important maritime history. Local people of Liverpool are known as Liverpudlians. They are also nicknamed "Scousers", in accordance with the local meal known as 'scouse', which is a form of stew. Liverpool is now a city of international significance, with a remarkable university. The central Liverpool boasts recently redeveloped many areas, with unrivalled architecture. The city is also noted for its Mersey Waterfront and the trendy Albert Dock (equipped with museums, bars, cafes, and shops), Waterloo, Wapping, Stanley Dock, and the general Liverpool Pier Head region. Liverpool is the home of world famous rock band – “The Beatles.”

Geography and Climate in Liverpool

Liverpool’s urban area is built across a crest of hills rising up to an altitude of about 70 m above sea level at Everton Hill. Facing Birkenhead and Wallasey across the Mersey River to the west, it runs directly into Prescot and Huyton in Knowsley to the east, and Crosby and Bootle in Sefton to the north. The climate in Liverpool is usually finest during the summer months. The average daily January temperature is about 6ºC (43ºF) and July temperature is 20ºC (68ºF). The city does not generally have an 'off-season' tourist period, and it is busy throughout the year.

History:

The borough of Liverpool was the result of King John's charter in 1207. By the mid-6th century, the population here was only about 500. In the 17th century, Liverpool experienced slow expansion in trade and population. A wet dock was built in 1715, which was the first wet dock in Britain. During the late-19th century, Liverpool was the "second Port of the Empire", which handled more merchandise than any English city outside London. In the late-20th century, the port’s declination and the contraction of city’s manufacturing industry badly affected the economy. However, since the mid-nineties, Liverpool’s economy has developed strongly and more rapidly than the national average.
