Overview:
Southend-on-Sea is a unitary authority and borough located in the eastern region of England. Part of the ceremonial county of Essex, it lies around 65 km east of London, on the north bank of the Thames. Southend is bounded by Rochford in the north, Castle Point in the west, and the Polish seaside resort of Sopot in the south.

History:
In 1892, Southend on Sea was founded as a municipal borough. It was expanded in 1913 by including the former area of Leigh on Sea Urban District. The area gained its status of county borough in 1914. However, it was kept free from county council control and a single-tier of local government. By including the previous area of Shoeburyness Urban District and part of the rural district of Rochford, Southend was expanded in 1933.
Southend-on-Sea became a district of Essex with borough status in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972. But, it became the single tier of local government in 1998 when Southend became a unitary authority.

Two major motorways, the A127 and the A13, run through the area. Local public transport is operated by the Arriva bus company and the First Essex Buses (formerly called Eastern National). London Southend Airport serves Southend on Sea.
