Overview:
Stockport town is the largest settlement in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport of Greater Manchester, in the North West England. It lies within the historic county borders of Cheshire. This large town in the region is around six miles south-east of Manchester. An important geographical feature is the River Mersey, which takes its origin here at the meeting point of the Rivers Goyt and Tame.
It is said that the name of the town is derived from two Saxon words, “Stock” (referring to castle) and "port" (referring to wood). According to the 2001 census, Stockport had a population of around 136,083.
Stockport’s major industrial areas lie within the town centre, with branches of many high-street shops to be found in the Merseyway shopping centre. The Grand Leisure Park complex located at the heart houses a ten-screen cinema, a bowling alley, an Olympic sized swimming pool, several restaurants and health complex.

History:
It is clear that Stockport was one of several areas in the country, which had a fortified stronghold in ancient British times. The area was ruled by the Normans, Saxons, and many other rulers who had control over the United Kingdom during the corresponding times.
Owing to its nearness to Manchester city, the town rapidly grew during the Industrial Revolution. Initially, it was home to many cotton manufacturing industries.
Stockport gained the status of municipal borough in 1835 under Municipal Corporations Act. It became a county borough in 1888. In 1974, Stockport combined with its adjoining districts and thus formed the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport in Greater Manchester.
