Overview:
Stoke-on-Trent is a city in Staffordshire, about half-way between Birmingham and Manchester, in the West Midlands region of England. It is a federation of six older towns, namely, Hanley, Stoke, Burslem, Tunstall, Longton and Fenton. Its position in the heart of England makes the city a favorite place for a day out or weekend away.
The city has an estimated population (2005 estimate) of 238,300. Among these, 94.8% are White and 3.5% S.Asian. Unlike most English cities, a directly-elected mayor leads the Stoke-on-Trent’s council. The city is home to the supreme pottery manufacturers in the world. There are several ceramic museums, factory shops, visitor centres, and excellent leisure and entertainment facilities in the city.
The single county borough of Stoke-on-Trent was born on April 1, 1910. It was officially granted city status in 1925. But, its county borough status was eliminated in 1974 and thus it became a non-metropolitan district of Staffordshire. On April 1, 1997, Stoke-on-Trent regained its status as a unitary authority independent of Staffordshire county council.
