Overview:
Sheffield is an important city and a metropolitan borough in northern England. A member of English Core Cities Group, it is a major steel manufacturing city in South Yorkshire. Famous for its cutlery business, Sheffield got its name from the River Sheaf, which flows through the city.
Sheffield is a geographically diverse city, lying adjacent to Rotherham. It is situated in a natural coliseum shaped by many hills and the confluence of five rivers, namely, Loxley, Don, Rivelin, Sheaf, and Porter. Sheffield is bounded by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough in the north, Derbyshire in the South, and the Peak District National Park and the Pennine hill range in the west.
Evidences show that Sheffield had settlements in the last ice age. But, its growth started only from the second half of the first millennium when Anglo-Saxon inhabited the area. By 1296, Sheffield became a small market town. In the 14th century, it became famous for the production of knives.
In the 1740s, founding of the techniques for the crucible steel, as well as for fusing a thin sheet of silver onto a copper slab to produce silver plating spurred the growth of Sheffield as an industrial town. Sheffield was integrated as a Borough in 1842 and achieved a city charter in 1893.
