Overview:
Walsall is an industrial town in the historic county of Staffordshire, in the West Midlands of England. The town is the seat of the Walsall Metropolitan Borough. Situated to the east of Wolverhampton and northwest of Birmingham, Walsall is sometimes referred to as part of the Black Country.
The name of the town is derived from the words "Walh halh", referring to "valley of the foreigners". In the early 13th century, it was a small market township. The industrial revolution changed it from a village to a town.
Walsall was the birthplace of many famous people, which include Jerome K. Jerome (a well-known writer), Nick Gillingham (Olympic swimmer), John Byrne (comic book creator), and Rachel Unitt (England women's football star).
According to the 2001 census, Walsall had a populace of 170,994 with the neighboring borough having a populace of 252,800. Aldridge, Willenhall, and Bloxwich are the adjoining towns in the borough.
Walsall is a major centre of mining and manufacturing in the region. Products from the town include leather goods, plastics, small hardware, electronics, aircraft parts, limestone quarrying, and chemicals. Traditionally, the town is also the home of the English saddle manufacture business.
Walsall contains one of the Wolverhampton University Halls of residence accommodating students who study teaching and sports related subjects. The town is home to Walsall F.C., the football club founded in 1888.
